Aizawl, September, 2026:Hindi Diwas was observed in Mizoram today along with the rest of the country. As part of the occasion, Greenhill Public School, Aizawl organised a Hindi Concert at Vanapa Hall, which was graced by the Governor of Mizoram, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), as the Chief Guest. Education Minister Dr Vanlalthlana attended as the Guest of Honour.
In his address, Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh stressed the importance of learning Hindi as part of educational transformation. He said that any such change must remain firmly rooted in cultural values and traditions, adding that without this foundation true success would be difficult to achieve. Highlighting the abundant talent available in Mizoram, he urged that it should not remain confined to the state but be showcased across the country and on the global stage. For this, he emphasised the need to learn additional languages, noting that proficiency in other languages is valuable in education, employment, business and tourism. “Mistakes are inevitable while learning a language, but one must not fear them, for it is through errors that true learning takes place,” he said. The Governor welcomed the Mizoram government’s initiative to introduce a one-day Hindi-speaking day every month in schools. He encouraged students to study the cultures, traditions and languages of others, to read widely and to gain a deeper understanding of India’s history. He also urged them to dream big and study diligently.
Commending the well-organised Hindi Concert presented by Greenhill Public School, the Governor appreciated the sincere efforts of the faculty and students that made the event a success. He observed that the programme was fully in keeping with the school’s motto, “Transforming Education.” In a rapidly changing world, he remarked, academic excellence alone is not sufficient. Students must also acquire knowledge, skills, good character, confidence, discipline, compassion and a strong sense of responsibility towards society and the nation. He called upon students to develop the confidence to compete at national and international levels while ensuring that their own language, culture, tradition and heritage are never lost.
Guest of Honour and Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana observed that India is a vast and diverse nation with numerous languages. In this context, proficiency in Hindi - spoken by a large section of the population - assumes particular importance, as it greatly aids communication and professional interactions with people from different regions of the country. He emphasised that Hindi can be learnt and used effectively without in any way compromising Mizo culture, traditions and values. In modern education, he said, language learning should not remain confined to examinations alone but must prioritise actual spoken proficiency. Acknowledging the importance accorded to Hindi by the Mizoram Education Reform Committee, the Minister noted that the Committee has recommended the introduction of a “one day a month Hindi-speaking day” in schools. Guidebooks have already been issued in this regard and implementation is currently underway. Dr. Vanlalthlana also appreciated the initiatives taken by Greenhill Public School in promoting Hindi while continuing to uphold Mizo culture and tradition.
Earlier, Rev. Dr K. Thanzauva, Director of Greenhill Public School, welcomed the gathering. The Hindi Concert featured impressive cultural performances by students and teachers of the school, including Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar awardee Esther Hnamte. Mr. David Zothanmawia, Vice Principal, proposed the vote of thanks and brought the programme to a close.
Among those present were Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Mr. Lalthansanga, former Education Minister Mr. Lalsawta, Padma Shri C. Kamlova, members of the Mizoram Education Reform Committee, members of the Greenhill Public School Board, teachers and students.
