Infrastructure projects should be completed faster and in a planned manner
Priority to Inner Ring Road, Metro Line 3, multimodal hub, industrial and tourism connectivity, water supply, solid waste management, fire services and river pollution control
Mumbai, September 2026: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has a crucial role in the planned and comprehensive development of Pune district, and infrastructure projects in the PMRDA region should be completed faster and in a systematic manner, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar said on Thursday.
Pawar reviewed various development projects in the PMRDA region at Sahyadri State Guest House. A detailed review was conducted of ongoing as well as proposed projects being undertaken through the PMRDA.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Chief Minister’s Secretary Dr Rajesh Deshmukh, PMRDA Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhary, Joint Commissioner (Administration) Rupali Awale-Dambe, Joint Commissioner (Land and Property) Poonam Mehta, In-charge Joint Commissioner (Unauthorised Construction) Himmat Kharade, Metropolitan Planner Smita Kalkutki, Chief Engineer, Engineering Special Projects, Rinaz Pathan, In-charge Chief Engineer Shivprasad Bagdi and heads of various PMRDA departments.
Pawar said the PMRDA jurisdiction covers 674 villages spread across approximately 5,215 square kilometres. Considering the rapid expansion of the Pune Metropolitan Region, increasing population, industrialisation, urbanisation and growing tourism opportunities, infrastructure planning should take into account the requirements of the coming years.
Focus on Strengthening Transport Connectivity
Pawar directed officials to expedite projects including the Pune Inner Ring Road, projects proposed under the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, Hingangaon Bridge and Yavat Railway Bridge.
She said effective connectivity linking different parts of Pune city and the PMRDA region was essential to strengthen the transportation network. She also directed officials to adopt an integrated approach covering multimodal hubs, industrial connectivity, connectivity to religious sites, tourism destinations and the airport.
Expedite Metro Line 3 to Ease Hinjewadi Traffic
In view of increasing traffic congestion in the Maan-Hinjewadi area, Pawar directed officials to take immediate steps to complete the Maan-Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Pune Metro Line 3.
Officials informed the meeting that 12 of the 23 stations on the metro corridor have been completed, while work on another five stations is in the final stage.
Pawar directed officials to accelerate the remaining work and coordinate effectively to bring the project into public service at the earliest.
Highest Priority to River Pollution Control
Pawar directed officials to expedite projects aimed at preventing pollution in the Indrayani, Pavana, Mula and Mutha rivers in the Pune Metropolitan Region.
She said merely constructing pollution-control infrastructure would not be sufficient. The concerned agencies and institutions must also become self-sustaining and financially viable so that they can meet future maintenance, repair and operational costs.
Strengthen Fire Safety Network
The meeting also discussed strengthening the fire safety mechanism in view of increasing urbanisation and population growth in the PMRDA region.
Work on the fire station at Kasar Amboli is currently in progress, while 12 additional fire stations have been proposed. Pawar directed officials to accelerate these projects and ensure effective planning so that residents of the PMRDA region receive prompt fire-fighting services.
Long-Term Planning for Drinking Water
Pawar stressed the need for long-term planning to address drinking water requirements in view of the rapidly increasing population and future urban expansion in the PMRDA region.
She directed officials to identify and develop new water sources and undertake integrated planning covering available water resources, distribution systems and future requirements.
Such planning, she said, should ensure adequate water supply for new residential settlements, industrial areas, tourist destinations and the growing population.
Pawar emphasised that the development of the Pune Metropolitan Region should not be restricted to roads and buildings. It should take a comprehensive approach covering transportation, water supply, environment, fire safety, industry, tourism and the overall quality of life of citizens.
