Patna, October 2026 : A political controversy erupted at a Congress event in Bihar’s capital Patna on Sunday after party president Mallikarjun Kharge made a controversial remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi in response to a heckler, triggering sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The incident occurred during the 139th birth anniversary celebrations of Shri Krishna Singh, Bihar’s first Chief Minister. According to reports, a man in the audience, identified as Santosh Singh, shouted, “Modi nahin jaayega” (Modi will not go), expressing support for the Prime Minister.
Responding to the interruption, Kharge said, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” (Even PM Modi’s father will have to go). The Congress president reportedly repeated the remark three times, escalating the exchange at the venue.
The situation took a further turn when Congress workers allegedly surrounded the man, assaulted him and removed him from the venue. A video of the confrontation subsequently circulated widely on social media, drawing attention to the incident and intensifying the political exchange between the Congress and the BJP.
BJP leaders criticised Kharge over his remarks, accusing the Congress president of using inappropriate language against the Prime Minister.
BJP spokesperson Tuhin Sinha reacted to the incident in a post on social media platform X, alleging that Kharge’s behaviour reflected growing frustration within the Congress party.
“Such disgusting, petulant, uncouth behaviour from Kharge ji shows the growing frustration in Congress ranks,” Sinha said, adding that the party’s attempts to create unrest through protests had failed.
Union Minister and BJP MP from Bihar Giriraj Singh also criticised the Congress leadership over the episode. Taking a swipe at the party, he said, “I used to think only Rahul Gandhi (Leader of Opposition) is foolish. Now it seems there’s a whole bunch of them.”
The incident has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP, with the Prime Minister’s remarks and the alleged assault on the attendee becoming central points of discussion.
The episode also highlights the increasingly confrontational exchanges between leaders and supporters of rival political parties at public events, as videos of such incidents quickly gain traction on social media and fuel political reactions.
