Animal Husbandry Commissionerate Signs MoU with MAHAPREIT for Solar Energy Projects in the Presence of Minister Pankaja Munde
Mumbai, October 2026 : The Maharashtra Animal Husbandry Department has taken steps to promote the effective use of solar energy, with the aim of reducing its electricity expenses. In this regard, the Animal Husbandry Commissionerate has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology Limited (MAHAPREIT) to prepare a detailed project report for implementing solar power projects on available land and premises under the Commissionerate’s jurisdiction.
The MoU was signed by Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr Kiran Patil and MAHAPREIT Director Deepak Kokate in the presence of Animal Husbandry Minister Pankaja Munde. Animal Husbandry Department Secretary Dr Ramaswamy N. and MAHAPREIT Managing Director Bipin Shrimali were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Munde said the agreement would be an important step towards bringing the electricity bills of all buildings under the Animal Husbandry Department down to zero in the future. She added that generating surplus electricity and selling it could also help increase the department’s revenue.
Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology Limited (MAHAPREIT), a subsidiary of the Mahatma Phule Backward Class Development Corporation, has expressed interest in setting up solar power projects on land and premises belonging to the Animal Husbandry Department. The company made a presentation on the proposal before Minister Munde.
As part of the preparation of the detailed project report, an assessment will be conducted to determine the availability of space on building rooftops. Site surveys of the department’s farms and premises, along with feasibility studies, will also be undertaken.
Following the submission of the detailed project report, solar power projects will be implemented on a pilot basis in the first phase. These will cover the rooftops of office buildings within the Animal Husbandry Commissionerate complex and the livestock farm operated by the Maharashtra Livestock Development Board at Sakud, in Ambajogai taluka of Beed district.
The initiative is expected to help the department reduce its dependence on conventional electricity, lower operating costs and explore opportunities to generate additional revenue through surplus solar power.
