- Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary conducted an aerial survey of the Gandak River from Sonpur to Valmikinagar in view of the floods in Nepal and the resulting situation in Bihar’s border and flood-prone areas.
- He inspected the upstream and downstream areas of the Valmikinagar Barrage. At the time of inspection, the discharge was approximately 1.06 lakh cusecs.
- The Chief Minister also inspected the control room at the barrage and obtained the latest information from officials on the water level and discharge of the Gandak River.
- The flood situation and administrative preparedness were reviewed in Bagaha, Valmikinagar, Bettiah and Motihari, among other border areas. The West Champaran District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police briefed him on the latest situation.
- The Chief Minister directed officials to maintain round-the-clock monitoring and take all necessary precautionary measures.
- Ensuring the safety of citizens, relief and rescue operations, and all possible assistance in flood-affected areas remains the government’s highest priority.
Patna, August 2026: Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Thursday conducted an aerial survey of the Gandak River from Sonpur to Valmikinagar to assess the situation in Bihar’s border and flood-affected areas following floods in Nepal.
During the aerial survey, the Chief Minister reviewed the flood situation, possible impacts and administrative preparedness in areas including Bagaha, Valmikinagar, Bettiah and Motihari. He later landed at Valmikinagar and inspected the Valmikinagar Barrage.
Choudhary inspected both the upstream and downstream sides of the barrage and reviewed the prevailing discharge situation. At the time of his inspection, the discharge was approximately 1.06 lakh cusecs. He also visited the control room at the barrage and obtained an updated briefing from officials of the Water Resources Department regarding the water level and discharge of the Gandak River.
Officials informed the Chief Minister that at around 11 p.m. on August 26, the water level/discharge of the Gandak River had reached a peak of approximately 1,50,200 cusecs, following which a continuous decline was recorded.
However, officials said that due to late rainfall in the Devghat area, a fresh rise in the water level of the Gandak River was being observed. No adverse impact on the embankments had been reported so far, and the Water Resources Department was continuously monitoring the situation.
The Chief Minister also spoke to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of West Champaran to obtain an update on the flood situation, possible impacts, security arrangements and administrative preparations. He directed officials to work with full preparedness, maintain continuous surveillance in vulnerable areas and take immediate action whenever required.
Choudhary emphasised that protecting citizens and providing them with every possible assistance during a flood situation was the highest priority of the state government. He directed all concerned departments and district administrations to remain fully alert and prepared to deal with any emerging situation.
Officials informed him that the Ganga River was currently showing a decreasing trend. However, a minor rise of around one to two centimetres could occur at some locations. In view of this possibility, the Chief Minister directed the Water Resources Department and district administration to maintain continuous monitoring.
The Chief Minister said the government was closely monitoring the flood situation and that all necessary measures related to relief, rescue and public safety were being accorded priority in affected areas.
He stressed that all departments concerned should remain vigilant and ensure that adequate arrangements were in place to respond promptly to any possible emergency.
During the inspection, Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Deepak Kumar, Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, Chief Minister’s Secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, Water Resources Department Secretary Dr Chandrashekhar Singh and other senior officials were present.
