Strict focus on green spaces, better landscaping, lighting and waste management

New Delhi, October 2026 : Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta on Saturday inspected the ongoing development, beautification and Chhath ghat construction works in the Munak Canal area near Prem Bari Bridge in Singalpur. During the visit, she reviewed the progress of various works and directed officials of the concerned departments to complete all projects within the stipulated timelines while maintaining high quality standards. She made it clear that development works must focus on quality, utility and aesthetics rather than merely fulfilling formalities, so that local residents can benefit from better facilities. She also stressed that devotees should not face any inconvenience during the Chhath festival.

The Chief Minister said that the Munak Canal area, once known for uncleanliness and disorder, is now being transformed into a clean, beautiful and well-organised space. The Delhi government aims to complete the construction of the ghats and related development works before Chhath, enabling devotees to offer prayers with full faith and devotion in a clean environment. She directed officials to regularly monitor the construction work and immediately address any shortcomings.

Better Planning for Beautification

During the inspection, CM Rekha Gupta also reviewed the development of green spaces and plantation work. She directed officials to ensure that plantation is not carried out without a well-thought-out plan. Instead, landscaping should be undertaken in an organised manner, keeping in mind the overall appearance of the area and the space available. She emphasised the proper placement of plants, attractive designs, the development of green belts and efforts to enhance the area's appearance. The Chief Minister directed the concerned officials to prepare a better design and carry out the work accordingly to develop a well-planned and attractive green space along the Munak Canal.

Strict Instructions on Lighting, Decoration and Cleanliness

Reviewing the construction of the Chhath ghats and arrangements in the surrounding areas, the Chief Minister directed officials to complete the finishing work on the ghat walls, nearby pathways and related locations on time. She instructed them to ensure that the walls are painted, the area is cleaned, excess construction material and debris are removed, and lighting is installed wherever required. She specifically directed officials to arrange attractive lighting and decorative light strings around the ghats for Chhath so that the entire area looks beautiful and festive.

She also asked officials to inspect the access routes to the ghats, stairs, drainage systems and other basic facilities. The Chief Minister said that negligence at any level would not be tolerated and all arrangements must be completed in time.

Roads, Footpaths and Surrounding Areas Must Be Developed in an Organised Manner

CM Rekha Gupta also reviewed work related to roads, footpaths, areas around the bridge and traffic management. She directed officials to ensure that roads and footpaths are constructed in accordance with local needs and the space available. Unnecessary construction must be avoided, with priority given to smooth traffic movement and pedestrian convenience. She stressed the need to find appropriate solutions to technical challenges encountered during construction and ensure that all works progress in coordination. The Chief Minister said that roads, green spaces, the bridge and the ghats must be developed as part of an integrated plan.

No Negligence in Waste Management

The Chief Minister issued strict instructions to officials on waste management and cleanliness in the area. She said that there must be no accumulation of garbage on roads and footpaths, foul smells or haphazard waste collection under any circumstances. A proper system for waste collection and disposal must be developed to ensure that nearby residents face no inconvenience and the area remains clean. She directed officials to ensure that cleanliness receives continuous attention alongside development works.

Munak Canal Area to Become a Blend of Public Amenities and Cultural Faith

CM Rekha Gupta said that Chhath is deeply connected with Delhi's cultural identity and public faith. A large number of devotees offer prayers to the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya during this sacred festival. The government, therefore, has a responsibility to provide better facilities for devotees and ensure that places of worship remain clean and well-organised. She directed officials to prioritise and complete all essential works before Chhath, ensuring that no shortcomings remain in the preparations.
