Delhi’s electric bus fleet continues to grow, with the number of e-buses reaching 5,238: Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh

New Delhi, October 2026 : As part of the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav and Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta on Tuesday flagged off 150 new electric buses from Anand Vihar Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT). Public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at Anand Vihar ISBT, Nand Nagri, Rohini Sector 37, Nangloi and Keshopur depot were also inaugurated.

The Union Minister subsequently visited the Delhi Pollution Control Committee’s (DPCC) Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at Shastri Park to review the technology being used to monitor pollution. Thirteen new air quality monitoring stations were also inaugurated during the visit. Union Minister of State Shri Harsh Malhotra, Delhi Environment Minister Sardar Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, MLAs Shri Om Prakash Sharma and Shri Arvinder Singh Lovely, along with officials from the concerned departments and other dignitaries, were present on the occasion.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the Delhi government was working in mission mode to control pollution, keeping it among its top priorities while making public transport cleaner, more modern and environmentally friendly. Tackling Delhi’s pollution challenge requires a rapid shift towards electric public transport and stronger supporting infrastructure, she said. The addition of 150 electric buses and the launch of public EV charging stations at five locations marked significant progress in this direction. The government aims to provide better transport facilities to Delhi residents and accelerate efforts to make the capital cleaner and more sustainable.

The Chief Minister said the government was addressing all key aspects of pollution control simultaneously, including transport, monitoring and infrastructure. She expressed confidence that support from the Central government, modern technology and coordination among departments would make pollution-control efforts more effective.

ICCC functioning as a war room against pollution: Environment Minister

Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the pollution situation had been reviewed during an inspection of the Anand Vihar pollution hotspot along with Union Environment Minister Shri Bhupender Yadav, Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta and Union Minister of State Shri Harsh Malhotra. He said time-bound action was being taken in coordination with the concerned agencies to address traffic congestion, road and construction dust, open waste burning, biomass burning and industrial pollution.

The Environment Minister said Delhi’s Integrated Command and Control Centre was functioning as a war room against pollution. Artificial intelligence (AI), advanced cameras and body cameras were being used to monitor more than 700 construction sites, mechanical road sweepers, air quality monitoring stations, Vayu Rakshak teams and activities such as open waste burning in real time. With the commissioning of 13 new air quality monitoring stations, their total number in Delhi had risen to 60. The introduction of 150 new electric buses and the inauguration of five public EV charging stations would further promote clean transport, he said.

Charging infrastructure being expanded: Transport Minister

Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh said Delhi’s electric bus fleet was being expanded continuously to promote clean transport. With the addition of 150 new electric buses, the number of electric buses had reached 5,238. Delhi’s overall bus fleet now comprises around 6,988 buses, including 1,750 CNG buses.

He said charging infrastructure was also being expanded alongside the electric bus fleet. Five public EV charging stations had been commissioned at the locations mentioned by the government, including Anand Vihar, Nand Nagri, Rohini Sector 37, Nangloi and Keshopur depot. These facilities would be available for private electric vehicles as well as electric buses. He urged Delhi residents to switch to electric vehicles and take advantage of the subsidies and incentives offered under the government’s EV policy.

Delhi’s bus fleet comprises nearly 7,000 buses

With 150 new electric buses being added to the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) fleet, the number of electric buses in Delhi had risen to around 5,238. The capital’s total bus fleet stood at approximately 6,988. The government aims to increase this number to around 14,000 buses by the financial year 2028-29. The new buses are air-conditioned and low-floor vehicles. They are equipped with CCTV cameras, panic buttons, real-time tracking and facilities for persons with disabilities.

Public EV charging stations commissioned at five locations

To promote electric vehicles, public EV charging stations have been commissioned at Anand Vihar ISBT, Nand Nagri, Rohini Sector 37, Nangloi and Keshopur depot. The Anand Vihar station has eight 240-kW chargers and two 60-kW chargers. A 1,600-kVA substation has also been built to ensure an adequate power supply. At each of the other four locations, four 240-kW chargers have been installed, along with the required power infrastructure.

Anand Vihar ISBT handles an average of around 2,300 buses daily and receives approximately 1.25 lakh passengers. High-capacity EV charging stations are also being developed at Maharana Pratap ISBT in Kashmere Gate and Veer Haqiqat Rai ISBT in Sarai Kale Khan.

ICCC monitoring pollution round the clock

Pollution in Delhi is being monitored 24 hours a day through the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). The system uses AI-based cameras, real-time data and GPS tracking of mechanical road sweepers. This helps monitor pollution-control activities and enables the concerned departments to take immediate action whenever required.

13 new air quality monitoring stations commissioned

Thirteen new Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) have been commissioned to monitor air pollution in Delhi. These stations will continuously track major pollutants, including PM2.5 and PM10. The data generated will provide information on air quality and strengthen pollution monitoring across different parts of the capital.
