Samrat Choudhary calls for timely implementation of Central education schemes; seeks two BHU centres and more Kendriya Vidyalayas in Bihar

Patna, October 2026: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Saturday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi for the Centre's support in improving the quality of school and higher education, strengthening infrastructure and expanding educational facilities across the state.

The Chief Minister was chairing a review meeting at the Samvad conference hall in the Chief Minister's Secretariat to assess the progress of educational initiatives, the implementation of Centrally sponsored schemes and measures to improve educational standards in Bihar.

During the meeting, Choudhary directed officials to ensure the complete and effective implementation of Central government education schemes. He stressed that funds allocated by the Union government must be utilised fully, transparently and within the stipulated timelines.

He called for faster execution of projects, effective use of available resources and the timely achievement of prescribed targets.

Focus on Government Schools

The Chief Minister said government schools played a crucial role in Bihar's education system. Approximately 80 per cent of schools in the state are government-run, and nearly 80 per cent of students are enrolled in them.

He said improving the quality of education, infrastructure and essential facilities in government schools remained a priority for the state government. He reiterated that the Centre's support was helping Bihar strengthen both school and higher education.

Officials from the Union Education Ministry and Bihar's Education and Higher Education Departments made presentations on the progress of various schemes and their implementation.

The meeting reviewed initiatives under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA-1 and RUSA-2) and the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA). A total of 101 projects have been approved under these schemes, and officials reviewed their progress, implementation and adherence to deadlines.

Vikramshila University Revival

Choudhary said 220 acres of land had been transferred on July 15, 2026, for the revival of Vikramshila University. He urged the Central government to expedite the next stages of the project.

The revival of Vikramshila, one of ancient India's renowned centres of learning, is expected to strengthen Bihar's educational heritage and expand higher education opportunities in the state.

The Chief Minister also requested the establishment of two centres of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Bihar. He said the initiative would provide students with better access to higher education and encourage academic activities within the state.

Infrastructure Funding for 211 Government Colleges

Highlighting the expansion of higher education, Choudhary said 211 government degree colleges were operating in Bihar.

He requested approval of ₹5,275 crore to develop the necessary infrastructure at these institutions, with an allocation of ₹25 crore for each college.

He said strengthening college infrastructure was essential to improving educational quality and ensuring students had access to adequate facilities.

The Chief Minister also requested the establishment of additional Kendriya Vidyalayas in Bihar to expand access to quality education and provide students with more educational opportunities.

Better Coordination and Teacher Training

The review meeting also discussed the expansion of higher education, improvements to government school infrastructure, reforms in teacher training and stronger coordination between the Central and state governments.

Officials emphasised the need to ensure that educational projects were implemented effectively and that students benefited from improved infrastructure and academic facilities.

Choudhary said the state government remained committed to strengthening Bihar's education system through coordinated efforts with the Centre. He stressed that the success of these initiatives would depend on timely implementation, efficient utilisation of funds and continuous monitoring.

The meeting was attended by Bihar Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari, Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, and senior officials from the Union and state governments.

Among those present were Anand Rao B. Patil, Additional Secretary in the Union Higher Education Department; Archana Sharma Awasthi, Additional Secretary in the Department of School Education and Literacy; Dr Amarpreet Duggal, an official of the Department of School Education and Literacy; Chief Minister's secretaries Lokesh Kumar Singh and Sanjay Kumar Singh; Education Department Secretary Rajiv Roshan; and Special Secretary Dharmendra Kumar, along with other senior officials.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to improving educational standards, strengthening infrastructure and expanding access to quality school and higher education throughout Bihar.
