New Delhi, Oct 2026 : The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Wednesday cautioned private satellite television channels against violations of the Programme Code and urged them to exercise due diligence while using artificial intelligence (AI) tools in news and programme production.
In an advisory, the ministry said several channels had violated provisions of the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, and the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994. It warned that violations could invite regulatory action under the existing legal framework.
The ministry also expressed concern over the increasing use of AI technologies, including generative AI, in broadcasting. It said such tools should be used only to assist production and presentation, without compromising the accuracy, authenticity or sensitivity of news content.
Broadcasters were reminded that the adoption of new technologies must not undermine editorial standards or distort factual reporting. The advisory specifically referred to the use of AI for graphics, virtual news presentations and other programming, calling for responsible and cautious deployment.
According to the ministry, an inter-departmental committee had observed that certain television broadcasts were not in keeping with the spirit of the Programme Code. The committee also flagged instances in which similar news reports and visuals on comparable subjects were broadcast across multiple channels, raising concerns about adherence to established broadcasting norms.
The committee recommended strict compliance with statutory provisions and emphasised that inappropriate behaviour, objectionable language and undesirable conduct should not be normalised through television broadcasts.
The advisory further called on channels to exercise greater care in selecting panellists for debates and discussion programmes. Broadcasters were asked to sensitise participants to ensure that discussions do not become platforms for communal, inflammatory or anti-national content.
The ministry stressed that channels must take appropriate preventive measures whenever discussions or live broadcasts risk crossing permissible limits. These safeguards could include muting audio, issuing warnings or disclaimers, and discontinuing live feeds when necessary to prevent derogatory, abusive or provocative remarks from being telecast.
The advisory comes amid growing scrutiny of television content and the expanding use of AI in media production. While AI tools can assist broadcasters in creating graphics and presenting information, the ministry underlined that their use must remain consistent with the responsibility to provide accurate and responsible news coverage.
By reiterating the requirements of the Programme Code, the ministry has sought to reinforce accountability among broadcasters and ensure that television content adheres to legal and editorial standards.
The ministry warned that channels must remain vigilant in both content production and presentation, as failure to comply with the prescribed rules could lead to action under the applicable regulatory framework.
