Delhi Court Orders Release of CJP Leaders After Custody Ends

New Delhi, Oct 2026 : A special executive magistrate (SEM) on Wednesday ordered the release of Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka following the expiry of their judicial custody in connection with a protest held at Jantar Mantar on October 14.

The two leaders were produced before the SEM, where their surety documents were also submitted during the proceedings. Their release order came after their custody period ended.

Das and Ranka were initially remanded to five days of judicial custody on October 14. They had been detained over allegations that they entered the denotified protest site at Jantar Mantar and violated peace bonds.

Their judicial custody was subsequently extended by two days on October 19, with the extended period scheduled to end on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the Delhi High Court declined to intervene in the matter, asking the two leaders to await the decision of the SEM court. The High Court also indicated that they could approach the appellate court if their grievances remained unresolved.

The SEM’s order brought an end to the immediate custody proceedings against the two CJP leaders in connection with the October 14 protest.
