Development Work Stalled for 30 Years in Delhi’s Markets Is Now Gaining Momentum: Development Minister Kapil Mishra

New Delhi, October 2026 : Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday laid the foundation stones for four development projects aimed at strengthening basic infrastructure at agricultural markets across Delhi. The ceremony was held at the APMC office in Azadpur under the Seva Sankalp Campaign. The projects will focus on improving roads, drainage, storage facilities and technology-driven management to provide farmers, traders and other market visitors with a smoother and more organised environment.

The Chief Minister said agricultural markets play a vital role in connecting farmers’ hard work and produce with the marketplace. Better infrastructure helps ensure the smooth movement, proper handling and safety of agricultural produce. The Delhi government aims to modernise market infrastructure and provide facilities that meet the needs of farmers, traders and other market users.

The event was attended by MP Shri Yogendra Chandolia, Cabinet Minister Shri Kapil Mishra, Delhi Agricultural Marketing Board Vice-Chairman Shri Arjun Sharma, MLA Shri Raj Kumar Bhatia and other dignitaries.

Four Projects to Improve Facilities at Agricultural Markets

At Keshopur Fruit and Vegetable Market, internal roads that are more than 20 years old will be rebuilt at a cost of ₹9.48 crore, making the movement of vehicles, traders and agricultural produce easier. Two temporary sheds will be constructed at Narela’s New Grain Market, which is spread across approximately 33 acres. The sheds will provide covered space for storing grain and help reduce the risk of damage during rain and adverse weather.

At Azadpur New Vegetable Market, problems associated with nearly 30-year-old sewerage and drainage lines in Blocks B and C will be addressed. Measures to tackle sinking, damaged and blocked pipelines, as well as water leakage, will help reduce waterlogging, maintain cleanliness and improve market operations.

A modern ‘Slow-Speed Weigh-in-Motion System’ will also be installed at the entry and exit gates of Azadpur Fruit and Vegetable Market. The system will allow commercial vehicles to be weighed without bringing them to a complete stop. Electronic records of vehicle weights will improve transparency in the weighing process and strengthen accountability in market operations.

From Roads and Sewerage to Drainage and Healthcare, Every Need Being Addressed

CM Rekha Gupta said the government is working to develop new markets and improve internal roads, sewerage and pipeline networks, drainage systems and waste disposal facilities, while also preventing stray animals from entering market premises. Attention is also being given to lighting, food and other basic amenities for workers, as well as healthcare centres. Workplaces and counters used by traders and commission agents will be improved, and essential facilities will also be developed for workers. The aim is to provide everyone working in the markets with a safer, more convenient and better workplace.

Modern Markets Planned to Meet the Needs of the Next 100 Years

The Chief Minister said the government wants to go beyond repairs and cosmetic changes to create robust infrastructure capable of meeting the needs of the next 100 years. Long-term plans are being drawn up after assessing the specific requirements of each market. She said consultants have been appointed for the development of Tikri Khampur Fruit and Vegetable Market, and the next steps are underway. A list of proposed works has been prepared for each market. Anuj Sharma, Vice-Chairman of the Delhi Agricultural Marketing Board, has been assigned responsibility for coordinating and monitoring the work.

CCTV, Control and Command Centre and Vehicle Facilities to Receive Attention

CM Rekha Gupta said security and technology would receive special attention in the modernisation of agricultural markets. Facilities are being planned around CCTV cameras, a Control and Command Centre, and the requirements of private and commercial vehicles. Development work will be tailored to the specific needs of each market, including those in Ghazipur, Narela, Azadpur and Keshopur. The Delhi government is working to strengthen market infrastructure and make operations more efficient and organised. Timely implementation of these projects will provide better facilities for farmers, traders and other stakeholders and improve the handling of agricultural produce.

Development and Modernisation of Markets Gaining Momentum: Kapil Mishra

Delhi Development Minister Kapil Mishra said a new phase of development was beginning in the city’s agricultural markets, with work that had remained stalled for nearly 30 years now gaining momentum. He said development works at Azadpur, Keshopur and Narela markets had been inaugurated under the Chief Minister’s leadership. Roads in several areas had not been built for 15-20 years, while some areas had gone without sewerage facilities for 30 years. These issues are now being addressed alongside efforts to modernise the markets. A new project to expand Narela Market is also being taken forward, while construction of a new flower market is planned to begin in the coming financial year. Work is also progressing towards developing a world-class, modern market at Khampur. The Delhi government aims to provide better facilities for farmers, traders and workers and make business operations easier.
