India Defeat Malaysia 5-1 to Retain Asian Games Hockey Gold

Harmanpreet Singh scored twice as India produced a dominant second-half performance to beat Malaysia 5-1 in the Asian Games 2026 men’s hockey final, retaining their continental title and securing a direct qualification berth for the LA 2028 Olympics.

Kakamigahara, Oct 2026 : India successfully defended their Asian Games men’s hockey title with a commanding 5-1 victory over Malaysia in the final at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium on Saturday, securing the gold medal and a direct qualification berth for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh led India’s charge with two goals, scoring in the 11th and 57th minutes. Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra also found the net as India overcame Malaysia after the two teams remained evenly matched during the opening stages.

Malaysia’s only goal came from Shello Silverius in the 14th minute, briefly restoring parity after Harmanpreet had given India the lead.

Both teams began cautiously, with neither creating a clear-cut opportunity during the opening 10 minutes. India won their first penalty corner in the 11th minute, but a mis-trap initially denied them the chance. They earned a retake, however, and Harmanpreet made no mistake, unleashing a powerful drive into the Malaysian goal.

Malaysia responded quickly. Just three minutes later, Silverius controlled a long aerial pass before producing an excellent finish to make it 1-1.

The Malaysians continued to threaten early in the second quarter, forcing Indian goalkeeper Mohith Shashikumar into an important save to deny Marhan Jalil.

India gradually regained control and began creating more pressure. After another penalty corner was wasted following a mis-trap, Jugraj Singh made amends by producing a powerful drag flick that beat Malaysian goalkeeper Zaimi Mat Deris and restored India’s lead.

The third quarter followed a similar pattern, with Malaysia making a strong start before India gradually imposed their rhythm and territorial control.

Around the 40-minute mark, India earned a series of penalty corners. A Malaysian foot inside the circle then resulted in a penalty stroke, giving Hardik Singh the opportunity to extend the lead. He calmly converted to put India 3-1 ahead.

With a two-goal advantage entering the final quarter, India concentrated on maintaining their defensive structure while encouraging Malaysia to commit more players forward.

That approach opened spaces for the Indian attack. Shilanand Lakra scored India’s only field goal of the final in the 54th minute, effectively putting the result beyond doubt.

Harmanpreet then completed the scoring three minutes later, converting another penalty corner in the 57th minute to seal India’s 5-1 triumph.

The victory marked India’s fifth Asian Games men’s hockey title and continued their dominance in the continental competition. It also secured the team’s place at the LA 2028 Olympics without the need to go through a separate qualification tournament.

The triumph brought another landmark achievement for Indian hockey as Manpreet Singh became the first Indian hockey player to win three Asian Games gold medals.

For India, the victory capped an impressive campaign and reaffirmed their position as Asian champions while providing a direct route to the next Olympic Games.
