India Eye Top 10 Finish as Asian Games Enter Day 10

Seven-medal haul on Day 9 takes India to 37 medals, with athletics, shooting, archery and boxing offering further opportunities in Aichi-Nagoya

Aichi-Nagoya, Sept 2026 : India will resume its effort to break into the top 10 of the Asian Games medal standings as the 2026 edition enters its 10th day in Aichi-Nagoya on Monday.

India ended Day 9 in 12th position with 37 medals — four gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze. The country added seven medals on Sunday, including historic silver-medal performances by squash players Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh.

The latest haul also included silver medals for Ancy Sojan in the women's long jump and Sarvesh Kushare in men's high jump. Harita Bhadra in the women's 200m, Tejaswin Shankar in the men's decathlon and Parul Chaudhary in the women's 3000m steeplechase contributed bronze medals to India's athletics tally.

India's four gold medals have come from shooting, women's cricket and kabaddi. The women's cricket team won the country's first gold of the Games, while the men's and women's kabaddi teams successfully defended their continental titles. Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet also combined to win gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.

Medal standings after Day 9

China continued to dominate the standings with 120 gold, 49 silver and 39 bronze medals for a total of 208. Japan were second with 37 gold, 62 silver and 58 bronze, while the Republic of Korea occupied third place with 21 gold, 23 silver and 40 bronze.

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Thailand followed in the next three positions. Bahrain were seventh, Iran eighth and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ninth. Malaysia completed the top 10, while Hong Kong, China were 11th and India 12th.

India's medal-winning performances

Shooting has remained one of India's strongest medal-producing disciplines. Elavenil Valarivan won silver in the women's 10m air rifle individual event after also contributing to the women's team silver alongside Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod.

Himanshu Dhillon secured silver in the men's 10m air rifle individual event, while Rudrankksh Patil, Dhillon and Parth Mane combined for team silver. Rudrankksh also won bronze in the individual competition.

India also collected medals in skeet and rifle events. Raiza Dhillon, Maheshwari Chauhan and Parinaaz Dhaliwal won bronze in women's skeet team competition. Anantjeet Singh Naruka, Bhavtegh Singh Gill and Mairaj Ahmad Khan secured bronze in men's skeet team competition, while Naruka and Parinaaz Dhaliwal added another bronze in mixed skeet.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Rudranksh Patil and Niraj Kumar won silver in the men's 50m rifle 3P team event. Ashi Chouksey, Vidarsa Kochalumkal Vinod and Tilottama Sen secured silver in the women's 50m rifle 3P team event.

Athletics delivers major boost

Athletics has also emerged as an important contributor to India's medal tally. Seema Kumari won bronze in the women's 10,000m, while Gulveer Singh secured silver in the men's 10,000m.

The mixed 4x400m relay team of Vishal T.K., M.R. Poovamma, Manu T.S. and Vithya Ramraj won silver. Manpreet Kaur added bronze in women's shot put, while Tajinderpal Singh Toor won silver in men's shot put.

Baranica Elangovan claimed bronze in women's pole vault and Sawan Barwal secured silver in the men's marathon. Prachi won bronze in women's 400m.

Harita Bhadra added another bronze in the women's 200m. Ancy Sojan's silver in the women's long jump and Sarvesh Kushare's silver in men's high jump further strengthened India's athletics showing.

Tejaswin Shankar won bronze in the decathlon, while Parul Chaudhary took bronze in the women's 3000m steeplechase.

Squash, badminton and table tennis add to tally

India's squash campaign produced two historic individual silver medals. Anahat Singh won silver in the women's singles, while Abhay Singh secured silver in the men's singles.

Joshana Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar also won bronze in mixed doubles. In badminton, India's men's team won bronze after a campaign featuring Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty, H.S. Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, Tharun Mannepalli, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, Hariharan Amsakarunan, M.R. Arjun and Dhruv Kapila.

Manush Shah and Diya Chitale won bronze in mixed doubles in table tennis.

Day 10 offers fresh medal opportunities

India's campaign continues on Monday with medal events and knockout contests across several disciplines. Shooting will again be in focus, with Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh and Rahi Sarnobat among those scheduled in the women's 25m pistol events. Athletics will feature Avinash Sable in the men's 3000m steeplechase, Murali Sreeshankar in the men's long jump, Parul Chaudhary in the women's 5000m and Rohit Yadav in the men's javelin.

The Indian men's cricket team is also scheduled to begin its Asian Games campaign against Afghanistan in the quarterfinal stage. Boxing, archery and other disciplines will provide additional opportunities for the Indian contingent.

With 37 medals already secured, India's immediate challenge is to convert more of its medal opportunities into gold while continuing to add silver and bronze medals. The competition near the top 10 remains closely watched as the Games move into their second half.

India's medal campaign has so far been spread across shooting, cricket, kabaddi, athletics, squash, weightlifting, badminton, wushu, rowing, soft tennis, table tennis and MMA. With several major events still ahead, the focus now shifts to maintaining the momentum generated by the medal-rich ninth day.
