Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh Meets Amit Shah, Seeks Centre’s Support for Lasting Peace

New Delhi, October 2026 : Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the prevailing situation in the state and ongoing efforts to restore peace and normalcy.

During the meeting at the Home Minister’s official residence, the Chief Minister briefed Shah on the steps taken by the state government to restore normal life, the challenges confronting Manipur and measures being undertaken to address public concerns. He sought continued support from the Centre to establish lasting peace and accelerate development across the state.

According to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Amit Shah assured Khemchand Singh that the central government would extend all possible assistance to restore peace, promote development and bring normalcy back to Manipur.

State Government Working to Restore Normalcy

During the meeting, Khemchand Singh informed the Home Minister that the state government was making sustained efforts to restore normalcy among different communities and address the difficulties faced by residents.

He said the government’s priority was to help people return to their normal routines and create an environment conducive to peace and stability.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of continued coordination between the Centre and the state government in tackling the challenges facing Manipur. He stressed that restoring peace and advancing development must go hand in hand to ensure long-term stability.

Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati Bus Service Restored

Khemchand Singh informed Shah that the Manipur government had successfully resumed the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati bus service, providing relief to passengers who had faced transportation difficulties for an extended period.

The restoration of the service is an important step towards improving connectivity between Manipur and other parts of the country.

National highways and transport services connecting the state with neighbouring regions play a significant role in supporting economic activity, facilitating the movement of people and ensuring access to essential services.

The Chief Minister described the resumption of the bus service as part of the broader efforts to restore normalcy and improve daily life in the state.

Amit Shah Assures Full Support

The Chief Minister also apprised the Home Minister of various issues confronting Manipur and sought the Centre’s cooperation in addressing them.

He emphasised that, alongside peace-building efforts, it was essential to sustain development initiatives and meet the aspirations of the people.

According to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Shah listened to the concerns raised by Khemchand Singh and assured him of the Centre’s continued support.

The Home Minister also appreciated the state government’s efforts to restore normalcy and work towards peace and progress.

Amit Shah Likely to Visit Manipur in October

An important aspect of the meeting was the proposed visit of the Union Home Minister to Manipur.

Khemchand Singh renewed his invitation to Shah to visit the state. The Home Minister accepted the invitation and indicated that he would travel to Manipur during October.

However, an exact date for the visit has not yet been announced.

The Chief Minister expressed hope that the proposed visit would provide an opportunity for further discussions between the central and state governments on the situation in Manipur and the measures required to address its challenges.

Peace Remains a Major Challenge

Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023, which forced thousands of people to leave their homes and disrupted normal life, transport and economic activities. Tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have remained a major challenge for the state administration.

According to information presented in the Manipur Assembly in September 2026, at least 306 people had been killed and 49 were reported missing in the ethnic violence since May 2023. More than 60,000 people had been displaced.

The state government continues to face the challenges of restoring peace, addressing the concerns of displaced families and helping affected communities return to normal life.

Centre-State Coordination in Focus

During his meeting with Shah, Khemchand Singh sought continued guidance and cooperation from the Centre to strengthen peace-building initiatives and fulfil the aspirations of Manipur’s people.

The Home Minister reiterated the central government’s commitment to supporting the state’s efforts towards peace, stability and development.

The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts to improve the situation in Manipur, with attention now focused on Shah’s proposed visit to the state later this month. The state government views continued engagement with the Centre as an important part of its efforts to restore normalcy and ensure sustained progress.
