New Delhi, Oct 2026 : Munitions India Limited (MIL), a state-owned defence manufacturer, has emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for an Indian Air Force (IAF) procurement programme valued at approximately ₹140 crore. The proposed contract involves the supply of 2.24 crore rounds of indigenous 7.62×39mm ball ammunition, supporting India's efforts to strengthen domestic defence production and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
According to available procurement information, MIL submitted a qualifying financial bid of approximately ₹140.09 crore for the supply of the ammunition. The tender reportedly attracted two bidders, but one competitor was disqualified during the technical evaluation process, leaving MIL as the sole qualifying bidder at the commercial evaluation stage.
The proposed order covers 22.4 million rounds of the A-07 MK-II variant of 7.62×39mm ball ammunition. The ammunition is designed for use in compatible small arms, including AK-47 and AK-203 assault rifles, as well as other weapons chambered for the same calibre. These firearms are used by personnel across India's armed forces and security establishments.
The procurement is intended to support the Indian Air Force's ammunition requirements and ensure adequate stocks for operational preparedness and training activities. A consistent supply of small-arms ammunition remains essential for maintaining service readiness, conducting training exercises and sustaining military capabilities.
The large volume covered by the proposed contract reflects the continuing requirement for standardised ammunition compatible with established rifle platforms. Timely replenishment of inventories is important to ensure that personnel have access to essential operational supplies without disruptions.
A key feature of the procurement is its focus on indigenous manufacturing. By sourcing ammunition from a domestic public-sector enterprise, the programme supports the government's broader objective of developing a self-reliant defence industrial base and strengthening domestic supply chains.
Munitions India Limited was established in 2021 following the restructuring of the former Ordnance Factory Board into multiple defence public-sector undertakings. The company manufactures a wide range of ammunition and related products for the Indian armed forces and other authorised customers.
Its role in supplying essential military consumables places it among the key participants in India's defence manufacturing ecosystem. Large-volume contracts such as the proposed IAF order can help sustain production capacity, improve supply-chain reliability and support the continued availability of critical defence supplies.
The procurement also aligns with the government's Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, which seek to expand domestic manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on imported defence equipment and materials.
Indigenous ammunition production is particularly important because small-arms ammunition is a recurring operational requirement. Building reliable domestic capacity can help the armed forces maintain inventory levels and respond more effectively to changing operational demands, while limiting exposure to international supply-chain disruptions.
The proposed contract further highlights the importance of domestic public-sector manufacturers in meeting the armed forces' routine and long-term procurement needs. Such orders can contribute to industrial capacity utilisation, manufacturing continuity and the development of a more resilient defence supply network.
However, MIL's emergence as the L1 bidder does not, by itself, confirm the final award of the contract. The procurement remains subject to the completion of the prescribed acquisition procedures and formal approval by the competent authority.
If finalised, the approximately ₹140 crore order would represent another significant ammunition supply contract for Munitions India Limited and contribute to India's continuing efforts to strengthen self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
