Vaping Can Cause Nicotine Addiction, Breathing Problems, Warns Pulmonologist

Mumbai, October 2026 : Vaping, often promoted as a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarettes, can expose users to nicotine addiction, airway irritation and breathing difficulties, a pulmonologist has warned, urging people not to consider e-cigarettes harmless.

Calling vaping a “stupid habit”, Dr Shivaraj A L, Lead Consultant and Head of Pulmonology at Aster Whitefield Hospital, cautioned that electronic cigarettes can expose users to potentially harmful substances despite the absence of conventional cigarette smoke and its characteristic smell.

According to the specialist, the aerosol generated by vaping devices may contain nicotine, fine particles, flavouring agents, volatile organic compounds and other substances that can irritate the respiratory tract. Repeated exposure may affect airway health and trigger symptoms in susceptible individuals.

Vaping May Affect Respiratory and Vocal Health

Dr Shivaraj explained that vaping can cause dryness and irritation in the airways. Inflammation involving the larynx and vocal folds may contribute to hoarseness, throat discomfort and vocal fatigue.

These symptoms can be particularly troublesome for singers, teachers, public speakers and others who depend on their voices professionally.

However, the pulmonologist cautioned that persistent voice changes should not automatically be attributed to vaping. A clinical examination is necessary to identify the underlying cause, as several medical conditions can produce similar symptoms. Research into the long-term effects of e-cigarettes on vocal health is also still evolving.

Vaping may trigger wheezing or aggravate symptoms among people with asthma and other respiratory conditions. Although researchers continue to investigate its long-term effects on lung and cardiovascular health, the absence of complete long-term evidence does not mean that e-cigarettes are safe.

Nicotine Addiction Is a Major Concern

Nicotine dependence is another significant health concern associated with vaping. Nicotine affects the brain's reward system, encouraging repeated use and potentially making it difficult for users to quit.

Some vaping products contain high concentrations of nicotine, increasing the risk of dependence. People attempting to stop may experience withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, restlessness, intense cravings and difficulty concentrating.

Young people may be particularly vulnerable because their brains are still developing. Early exposure to nicotine can increase the risk of dependence and make quitting more challenging.

The health risks associated with vaping can vary depending on the device, the substances used and the frequency of exposure. Nevertheless, the possibility of airway irritation and nicotine addiction remains a concern for medical professionals.

When Should Vaping Users Seek Medical Advice?

Dr Shivaraj advised people experiencing persistent hoarseness, throat irritation or breathing difficulties to seek medical attention. Individuals whose voice changes continue for more than two or three weeks should consult an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist, particularly if they use e-cigarettes.

Quitting vaping can be difficult for people who have developed nicotine dependence. Professional guidance, psychological counselling and appropriate medication, when recommended by a qualified healthcare professional, may help improve the chances of successfully stopping.

Medical experts emphasise that vaping should not be regarded as harmless simply because it does not produce the same smoke as conventional cigarettes. Awareness of its potential health effects, early recognition of symptoms and timely medical advice are important steps towards protecting respiratory health.
