Washington, Oct 2026 : Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the United States temporarily suspended critical intelligence sharing with Ukraine for three days, leaving its forces without American advance warnings of Russian ballistic missile attacks during that period.
In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Zelensky said the interruption affected intelligence that Ukraine could not obtain from other partners in the same form. He also expressed concern that restrictions on satellite communications used by Ukrainian forces remained in place, raising questions about the extent of Washington’s military and intelligence support for Kyiv.
Zelensky said Ukraine continued receiving information from European governments and other international partners during the disruption. However, he stressed that their capabilities could not fully compensate for the specialised intelligence provided by the United States.
“We didn’t see attacks of Russia using ballistic missiles,” Zelensky said, describing the consequences of the interruption.
He explained that dozens of countries were assisting Ukraine but that American intelligence remained particularly important in identifying and warning of incoming Russian ballistic missile strikes.
“We have dozens of countries who help. But only United States has this unique intelligence to say, to tell us, to tell our side when Russia uses ballistic missiles,” he said.
“And we didn’t get it during ballistic attacks during three days.”
According to Zelensky, the intelligence-sharing arrangement was subsequently restored after a temporary suspension. He expressed appreciation for the resumption of the service, saying the system was functioning again.
“It was blocked for some period of time. And then it was deblocked by American side. We are very thankful for this. Now it works,” he said.
Dispute Over Starlink Restrictions
The Ukrainian President also raised concerns about limitations affecting Starlink, the satellite internet network operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which has been used to support communications by Ukrainian forces.
Asked whether the restrictions had been imposed deliberately, Zelensky said Ukrainian military officials believed the decision had originated with the US government. He suggested SpaceX had technically implemented the measures following instructions from Washington, although he acknowledged that he did not know which official or department had authorised them.
“Of course the message came from government. I don’t know from whom, what cabinet, and etc,” Zelensky said.
He also indicated that satellite communications had not been fully restored without restrictions.
Asked whether the limitations had been removed completely, he replied: “No, not of course. We have limitation.”
The remarks added to tensions between Kyiv and Washington over US President Donald Trump’s approach to the war and the future of American support for Ukraine.
White House Officials Reject Allegations
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent challenged Zelensky’s account during a separate appearance on the same NBC programme. He said Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had categorically denied that anyone in the administration had ordered restrictions on Starlink.
“President Trump and Secretary Rubio have categorically said that no one in the Trump administration did that,” Bessent said.
Describing Zelensky’s allegation as reckless, Bessent added that he had no information about the reported interruption in intelligence sharing.
“Again, I don’t know anything about that, but we’ve been very clear,” he said.
The contrasting statements left key questions unresolved, including who was responsible for the reported disruption, whether the intelligence suspension and satellite communications restrictions were connected, and what prompted the changes.
Neither account, as presented in the interview, established the precise circumstances behind the reported interruptions.
Ukraine Says US Support Remains Critical
Zelensky acknowledged that Ukraine had developed an extensive network of international partners since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Nevertheless, he said American assistance remained essential to the country’s defence.
“If it’s without United States’ support, it’s very difficult,” he said.
US intelligence, military equipment and satellite communications have played significant roles in Ukraine’s efforts to counter Russian military operations, including missile and drone attacks.
The reported three-day interruption has therefore highlighted Kyiv’s continued reliance on American capabilities, even as European countries expand their support.
The episode also underscores the importance of intelligence coordination and reliable communications for Ukrainian forces, particularly as diplomatic differences between Trump and Zelensky continue to shape the broader debate over the future of US involvement in the conflict.
