Abhishek Sharma’s Record-Breaking 113 Powers India to 3-0 T20I Series Lead Over New Zealand

Wellington, Oct 2026 : Abhishek Sharma produced a breathtaking display of power-hitting, smashing a 38-ball 113 to guide India to a commanding six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third T20 International at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on Tuesday. The emphatic win gave India an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, with two matches still to be played.

Chasing a challenging target of 199, India completed the pursuit in just 13.2 overs, finishing at 202/4. Abhishek's explosive century, combined with an impressive 45 off 19 balls from young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, ensured that the visitors dominated the contest and rewrote several batting records.

Abhishek struck his fourth T20I century and his 11th hundred in the T20 format overall, surpassing veteran India batter Virat Kohli, who has scored 10 centuries in T20 cricket. He now occupies third place on the list of players with the most T20 centuries, behind West Indies legend Chris Gayle, with 22, and Pakistan's Babar Azam, with 13.

The left-handed batter dismantled the New Zealand bowling attack with remarkable aggression, combining clean striking with exceptional timing. His innings set the tone for a chase that quickly turned into a one-sided exhibition of India's batting firepower.

India rewrite powerplay records

The opening partnership between Abhishek and Sooryavanshi proved devastating for the hosts. Promoted to the opening position for the match, the young Sooryavanshi complemented Abhishek's attacking approach with a rapid 45, leaving New Zealand's bowlers struggling to find answers.

India raced to 118 without losing a wicket in the first six overs, registering the highest team total in a men's T20 International powerplay. The previous record was held by Romania, who scored 116/0 against Serbia in 2021.

The visitors also reached the 50-run mark in just 2.2 overs, equalling the fastest team fifty recorded in T20 cricket. Papua New Guinea had achieved the same milestone against Vanuatu, while Romania had also reached 50 in 2.2 overs against Serbia.

India crossed 100 runs in five overs, making it the second-fastest team to reach the landmark in T20 cricket, behind Eswatini, who achieved the feat in 4.5 overs against Mozambique earlier this year.

The remarkable start effectively took the pressure off the Indian middle order, with the required run rate falling sharply as the opening pair attacked virtually every bowler introduced by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner.

New Zealand strike back, but India finish comfortably

Despite the extraordinary start, New Zealand managed to claim four wickets as the innings progressed. Kyle Jamieson dismissed Sooryavanshi in the eighth over before removing Abhishek in the 10th, ending the opener's spectacular innings of 113.

Jamieson later accounted for Sanju Samson, who contributed 18 runs. Santner dismissed Shreyas Iyer for five in the 13th over, while the Indian captain was caught at deep mid-wicket.

Matthew Fisher also picked up a wicket, finishing Sooryavanshi's innings, while Jamieson claimed two wickets overall. However, the damage inflicted during the powerplay had already left India firmly in control.

Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir guided India across the finish line in the 14th over, completing the chase with six wickets remaining.

New Zealand were also without key fast bowlers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson because of fitness concerns, leaving their depleted attack vulnerable against India's aggressive batting.

Daryl Mitchell's unbeaten 89 lifts New Zealand to 198

Earlier, New Zealand posted 198/3 in their allotted 20 overs, courtesy of a career-best T20 score of 89 not out from Daryl Mitchell. The right-hander struck 52 balls and anchored the innings, keeping the hosts competitive despite India's disciplined bowling towards the end.

New Zealand were well placed at 100/2 after 10 overs and appeared poised to finish with a total beyond 200. Mitchell continued to build the innings, while Bevon Jacobs provided valuable support with 39 off 23 deliveries.

The hosts reached 123/3 after 12 overs but struggled to accelerate during the closing stages. India's bowlers adjusted their lengths and relied on fuller deliveries and yorkers, exploiting the longer straight boundaries at the Wellington venue.

Only 63 runs came from the final seven overs as India restricted New Zealand's late scoring surge. Arshdeep Singh finished with figures of 1/33, while Axar Patel claimed 1/36. The disciplined effort prevented the hosts from building the momentum needed for a substantially bigger total.

Mitchell remained unbeaten on 89, but New Zealand's inability to capitalise on their position at the halfway stage ultimately proved costly.

India seal series with two matches remaining

India's comprehensive victory highlighted the depth and aggression of their T20 batting unit, with Abhishek's historic innings emerging as the defining moment of the contest. Sooryavanshi's rapid contribution further underlined India's ability to attack from the outset.

With a 3-0 advantage in the five-match series, India have secured the series with two games remaining. New Zealand, meanwhile, will look to address their bowling concerns and regain momentum in the remaining fixtures.

Brief Scores:

New Zealand: 198/3 in 20 overs (Daryl Mitchell 89 not out, Bevon Jacobs 39; Arshdeep Singh 1/33, Axar Patel 1/36).

India: 202/4 in 13.2 overs (Abhishek Sharma 113, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 45; Kyle Jamieson 2/45, Mitchell Santner 1/17).

Result: India won by six wickets and took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.
