Advisory Committee on Assam Rifles Land Holds Meeting

Aizawl, November 2026: The Advisory Committee on Assam Rifles (AR) Land, comprising representatives of various organisations and chaired by the Chief Minister, held a meeting at the CM Conference Hall today. The committee reviewed the progress of ongoing initiatives and discussed key proposals for the future.

The committee suggested that the proposed Aizawl Square should have a circular layout with a surrounding footpath. As the site is located on relatively elevated terrain, the ground level should be lowered to some extent. It was also suggested that if trees need to be cut, more attractive trees, preferably native varieties of Mizoram, should be planted in their place to create a well-maintained and visually appealing environment.

The Aizawl Spine Road, which is currently being widened, is 14 metres wide and includes a 1.5-metre footpath. In view of public criticism that the footpath is not sufficiently wide, the committee recommended widening the road slightly beyond the present plan. It also suggested that the construction of roadside retaining walls should be undertaken in a manner that enhances the beauty of the city.

Regarding the proposed relocation of the temple, a site has been identified beyond the General Post Office, shortly before the location earmarked for the construction of an Open Amphitheatre.

The alignment for the new road connecting the ongoing Saron bypass with the proposed exit point has also been finalised. The route will pass behind the existing church premises, the new site proposed for the Baptist Church, and the land belonging to Modern School, connecting the new bypass road with the proposed new approach road to Aizawl Square.

The Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department has prepared a plan to develop the forest area below the new bypass road, above Bethlehem locality, without damaging the existing trees and vegetation. The area will be beautified and developed as a public recreational space. Funds will also be made available for the proposed work. The committee approved the department's plan.

The Assam Rifles land development initiative was launched as an Early Bird Project on March 17, and work is currently underway at various locations.

The meeting was attended by K. Sapdanga, Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation; B. Lalchhanzova, Revenue Minister; Lalnghinglova Hmar, Tourism Minister; Lalmuanpuia Punte, Adviser to the Chief Minister; Khilli Ram Meena, Chief Secretary; and other committee members.
