Iran Says Strait of Hormuz Could Reopen Within Two Days if US Meets Its Demands

Tehran, Nov 2026 : Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz could be reopened within two days if the United States meets Tehran's "legitimate" demands.

Speaking at his weekly press conference in Tehran, Baghaei said the framework for any indirect engagement between Iran and the US, facilitated by mediators, remained a seven-day proposal submitted by Tehran in September. He added that Iran had reduced the time required to implement the plan to just two days as a gesture of goodwill.

"We have announced that if Iran's demands are met, the possibility will exist to restore security to the Strait of Hormuz and start the negotiation process in a short period of time," he said, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Baghaei said Iran had presented its demands "clearly, reasonably, and logically". He maintained that Tehran would not agree to any arrangement to reopen or secure the waterway unless Washington lifted its naval blockade against Iran and addressed its stated demands.

He said the next move rested with the United States, which would have to decide how it wished to proceed with the proposed process.

Iran had conveyed its seven-day proposal to the US through mediators on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 22. The plan outlined Tehran's conditions for ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and the US have reportedly continued exchanging messages on the proposal since its submission.

The latest statement comes amid heightened tensions following military action involving Israel, the United States and Iran. On February 28, Israel and the US launched joint attacks on Tehran and several other Iranian cities. Iran retaliated with waves of missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and US military bases and assets across the region. Tehran also tightened its control over the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It serves as one of the world's most important energy transportation routes, carrying crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from major Gulf producers to international markets.

Any disruption to shipping through the narrow waterway has significant implications for global energy supplies and international trade. Iran's proposal to restore security and reopen the passage within two days, subject to US acceptance of its conditions, therefore places the future of the strategic corridor at the centre of the ongoing diplomatic exchanges.
