Ajmer to Get ₹147-Crore Advanced Gas-Based 132 kV Substation, Move Towards Power Self-Sufficiency

Project designed to meet electricity demand for the next 50 years; Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani inspects potential sites

Ajmer/Jaipur, October 2026: Ajmer is set to take a major step towards achieving self-sufficiency in the power sector with the proposed construction of a state-of-the-art gas-insulated 132 kV grid substation (GSS) at an estimated cost of ₹147 crore.

Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani visited several potential sites in Ajmer to assess land options for the ambitious project, which was announced in the state government's Budget. Preparations for implementing the project are in the final stages at the administrative level, and ground-level work is expected to begin after the site is finalised.

During the inspection, Devnani visited the Hathibhata Power House, TT College and various land parcels along Jaipur Road. He held detailed discussions with officials on the technical suitability of the sites, their geographical characteristics and the feasibility of establishing the proposed grid substation.

The project is expected to significantly strengthen Ajmer's electricity infrastructure and improve the reliability of power supply across the city.

Designed to meet future power demand

At present, Ajmer receives electricity through grid substations located on the outskirts of the city. This arrangement can lead to technical constraints and transmission-related challenges because of the long distances involved in power delivery.

The proposed gas-insulated 132 kV substation is expected to address these limitations and serve as a critical component of the city's electricity distribution network.

The facility is being designed with a long-term vision, taking into account the next 50 years of electricity requirements. Its planning will consider population growth, urban expansion and rising demand for electricity to ensure that residents face fewer problems related to power shortages, voltage fluctuations and unreliable supply in the coming decades.

Benefits for homes, businesses and industries

Once operational, the new substation is expected to benefit lakhs of households, commercial establishments, educational institutions and industrial units across Ajmer.

The project aims to provide a more reliable, stable and high-quality electricity supply, while supporting local businesses, industrial activity and the city's broader economic development.

Officials believe the investment will strengthen the power infrastructure needed to accommodate Ajmer's future growth.

Assembly Speaker directs officials to expedite work

During site inspections and review meetings, Devnani held detailed discussions with senior electricity department officials, both over the telephone and in person.

He directed the officials to complete all technical and administrative formalities within the stipulated timeframe so that the benefits of the project could reach residents as soon as possible.

Senior officials and engineers from Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited and the Ajmer Development Authority accompanied him during the inspection.

The officials assured the Assembly Speaker that the selection of land and implementation of the project would be undertaken transparently, in accordance with state government directives and while maintaining high standards of quality.

Space-efficient and modern power infrastructure

The proposed substation will use gas-insulated technology, which enables high-capacity electrical equipment to operate within a comparatively compact space.

This makes the technology particularly suitable for urban areas where land availability is limited and electricity demand is increasing.

The project is expected to mark a significant milestone in Ajmer's power infrastructure development, combining improved electricity reliability with modern, space-efficient infrastructure.

The state government's initiative, supported by Devnani's efforts to expedite the project, is expected to strengthen Ajmer's capacity to meet its growing electricity needs and support its long-term urban and industrial development.
