Centre Introduces Second Two-Year Service Option for Agniveers Under Agnipath Scheme

New Delhi, November 2026 : The Centre has announced a significant change to the Agnipath military recruitment scheme, allowing Agniveers to opt for an additional two-year service term after completing their initial four years in the armed forces. The decision is aimed at providing more opportunities for longer military service while enabling the armed forces to retain trained and experienced personnel.

The Union Cabinet decision was announced by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General N.S. Raja Subramani at a press conference on Wednesday.

Under the existing Agnipath framework, 25 per cent of Agniveers completing their four-year engagement are eligible for induction into the armed forces as regular soldiers. The remaining 75 per cent will now be offered the option of a second engagement period lasting two years.

Explaining the revised arrangement, General Subramani said, "75 per cent of Agniveers will be offered a second engagement period of two years. After completing those two years, all Agniveers will be given an opportunity to become regular soldiers in the Indian Armed Forces. There are two conditions: they must be willing to join, and they must meet the prescribed selection criteria."

The additional service period will provide an opportunity to Agniveers who are not selected for regular service after their initial four-year tenure to continue serving in the military. At the end of the second engagement, they may also be considered for regular induction, subject to their performance and the selection requirements.

The announcement comes as the first batch of Agniveers is completing its four-year service this month.

Performance-Based Selection for Regular Service

The CDS clarified that completion of the additional two-year term would not automatically guarantee regular recruitment. The selection process will take into account individual performance, achievements during service and the organisational requirements of the armed forces.

Willingness to continue serving will be essential, but candidates will also have to fulfil the prescribed eligibility and selection standards. The operational needs of the Army and other services will remain an important consideration in the final decision.

According to General Subramani, Agniveers undergo periodic performance evaluations during their service. These assessments cover several aspects, including physical fitness, motivation, morale, discipline and technical proficiency.

The evaluation process is intended to provide an objective basis for identifying personnel who demonstrate the required capabilities and suitability for longer military service.

The additional two years will also give Agniveers more time to improve their professional skills, gain practical experience and take on further responsibilities. Those who perform well and meet the required standards may subsequently be considered for regular service.

Higher Pay and Service Fund Benefits

The revised arrangement will also provide financial benefits to Agniveers opting for the second engagement period. General Subramani said personnel serving the additional two years would receive higher pay and an increased service fund benefit, improving their financial returns for the extended tenure.

The additional engagement is expected to offer greater continuity in service for those willing to remain in the armed forces while providing them with further opportunities to demonstrate their capabilities.

Focus on Retaining Trained Personnel

General Subramani said the second service term would help the armed forces benefit from the training and experience acquired by Agniveers during their initial four years.

During this period, recruits receive military training, develop discipline and gain experience in handling different operational and organisational responsibilities. Retaining suitable personnel for another two years would allow the armed forces to build on these capabilities and make greater use of their accumulated experience.

The government believes the revised arrangement will help balance the aspirations and performance of Agniveers with the manpower and operational requirements of the military.

The decision marks an important change in the implementation of the Agnipath scheme, providing a further opportunity for eligible Agniveers to pursue a longer career in the armed forces. It also introduces an extended assessment period before their possible consideration for regular military service, while offering improved financial benefits during the additional engagement.
