Choghadiya: Understanding Auspicious Timings for Different Activities in Vedic Astrology

Jaipur Nov 2026 : In traditional Indian astrology, Choghadiya is a system used to identify auspicious and inauspicious periods for undertaking specific activities. The day and night Choghadiya cycles begin respectively at sunrise and sunset, with each period lasting approximately one-and-a-half hours.

According to Vedic tradition, there are seven types of Choghadiya: Char, Udveg, Shubh, Labh, Rog, Kaal and Amrit. Each is associated with activities considered suitable during that particular period.

A traditional verse explains their significance:

“Undertake journeys and operate vehicles during Char; avoid important activities during Udveg. Shubh is suitable for adornment and auspicious ceremonies, while Labh favours business. Rog is associated with bathing after recovery from illness, and Kaal with storing wealth. Amrit is considered suitable for all activities.”

The traditional interpretation also provides specific guidance for each period.

Char: This period is considered suitable for travelling and activities involving vehicles, machinery and movement.

Udveg: Land-related matters and permanent or long-term activities are traditionally associated with this period.

Shubh: Activities such as personal adornment, engagement ceremonies and wearing the traditional bridal chooda are considered favourable.

Labh: This period is regarded as favourable for business, trade and commercial activities.

Rog: According to traditional beliefs, this period is associated with bathing after a person recovers from an illness.

Kaal: The period is traditionally considered suitable for collecting and accumulating wealth, with the belief that it may contribute to financial growth.

Amrit: This is regarded as the most auspicious period and is considered suitable for undertaking all kinds of शुभ (auspicious) activities.

In everyday life, people often look for favourable timings before beginning important tasks. Traditional Indian astrology considers not only the year, month, season, day and weekday but also divides each day into Choghadiya periods to identify suitable timings for specific activities.

Undertaking an activity during its corresponding Choghadiya is traditionally believed to bring favourable results.
