New Delhi, November 2026 : Delhi Police has registered an FIR against senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan for allegedly sharing a digitally manipulated video of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov containing purported remarks critical of India, officials said on Wednesday.
The case was registered at the Special Cell Police Station after cyber patrolling on November 3 led police to a social media post by the handle @thequotesnews. The post claimed that a doctored video of Lavrov had been shared through Bhushan's X account.
According to police, the video allegedly contained misleading and inflammatory content that could spread rumours, defame individuals and disturb public order.
The FIR invokes Sections 336(4), 353(1)(c), 356 and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 66C of the Information Technology Act, relating to identity theft.
The development follows a fact-check by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which flagged the video as digitally manipulated and falsely attributed to the Russian foreign minister.
The fabricated clip purportedly showed Lavrov making critical remarks about India's internal affairs and its purchases of Russian oil.
