Glenn Maxwell Retires from International Cricket After Stellar Career

New Delhi, Nov 2026 : Australia’s explosive all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from international cricket on Monday, bringing an end to a career spanning more than a decade across all three formats.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Maxwell represented Australia in 286 international matches, scoring 7,226 runs and taking 136 wickets. Known as ‘The Big Show’, the 38-year-old was a key member of Australia’s triumphant campaigns at the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Maxwell made his international debut in an ODI against Afghanistan in 2012 and went on to establish himself as one of the most destructive white-ball batters of his generation. His unorthodox stroke-play, power-hitting and ability to turn matches around made him a formidable opponent.

He is also joint-holder of the record for most T20I centuries, with five, alongside India’s Rohit Sharma.

One of the defining moments of Maxwell’s career came during the 2023 ODI World Cup league-stage match against Afghanistan at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Battling severe cramps and struggling with movement, Maxwell produced a remarkable unbeaten 201 off 128 balls to guide Australia to a three-wicket victory while chasing 292.

Australia had been reduced to 91/7 and appeared close to defeat before Maxwell’s extraordinary innings turned the match around.

Maxwell played seven Tests for Australia, with his last appearance in the format coming in 2017. He subsequently focused largely on limited-overs cricket, where he enjoyed greater success.

He had earlier announced his retirement from ODI cricket following the 2025 Champions Trophy, ending his career in the format with 3,990 runs. His final T20I appearance came against Oman in February this year.

Maxwell’s retirement closes a distinguished international career in which he became one of Australia’s most influential limited-overs players. Alongside his explosive batting, he contributed with useful off-spin bowling and athletic fielding, making him a valuable all-round asset.

His ability to produce match-winning performances under pressure, particularly in white-ball cricket, will remain a defining feature of his legacy.
