Tehran, Sep 2026 : Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Sunday claimed that its aerospace forces launched several ballistic missiles at a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer, alleging that the vessels had harassed Iranian ships and taken part in a naval blockade against the country.
According to a statement published by the IRGC’s official news outlet, Sepah News, the two US vessels were damaged and subsequently withdrew from the conflict zone. The IRGC did not provide independent evidence of the alleged damage or specify the identities of the American warships involved.
The Iranian force warned Washington against continuing what it described as “hostile and aggressive” actions, saying any further escalation would draw a “formidable” response from Iran’s armed forces.
The claims came a day after the IRGC Navy said it had attacked three oil tankers in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and three other US-affiliated vessels in separate locations. Iranian authorities said the attacks were carried out in retaliation for US strikes on Iranian tankers earlier on Saturday.
The IRGC Navy said the three tankers targeted in the Strait of Hormuz were attempting to cross the waterway through an “unauthorised” route. It added that three other vessels were struck in different areas, without providing further details about the extent of the damage.
The United States has offered a different account of the confrontation. US Central Command said on Saturday that American forces had struck three Iranian crude oil carriers after the IRGC launched ballistic missiles towards two US Navy warships operating in regional waters.
“A US aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer successfully evaded multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks. No American personnel were harmed,” US Central Command said in a statement posted on X.
The conflicting claims could not be independently verified, with both sides presenting sharply different accounts of the military confrontation.
In its latest statement, the IRGC also claimed that its naval forces had targeted a US Army unmanned surface vessel after it attempted to enter a protected area of the Strait of Hormuz. The force did not provide details on whether the unmanned vessel was damaged or destroyed.
The developments underline the rapidly escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes. Any sustained military confrontation in the area could threaten commercial shipping and global energy supplies, given the waterway’s importance to international oil transportation.
The latest exchanges also raise concerns that attacks involving military vessels, tankers and unmanned platforms could further widen the confrontation and increase risks to maritime traffic across the region.
