Pargat Singh Appointed Punjab Congress Chief Ahead of 2027 Assembly Polls

Chandigarh, Oct 2026: Former Olympian and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh has been appointed as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), succeeding Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.

The leadership change comes ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections and follows Warring’s resignation from the post on October 2. Pargat Singh was among the leaders being considered by the Congress high command for the state party president’s position.

A former Indian hockey captain and Olympian, Pargat Singh has had a long association with both sports and public life. He has served as Punjab’s Sports and Education Minister and currently represents the Jalandhar Cantt constituency in the state Assembly.

His appointment comes at a crucial stage for the Punjab Congress, with the party expected to focus on strengthening its organisation and preparing for the next Assembly elections.

Pargat Singh’s experience in state politics and his background as a former international hockey player bring a distinct profile to the leadership role. As PPCC president, he will be responsible for leading the party’s state unit and coordinating its organisational activities ahead of the 2027 electoral contest.

The change in leadership marks a new phase for the Punjab Congress, with the party now expected to work on organisational preparations and election-related strategy in the run-up to the Assembly polls.
