New Delhi, October 2026 : Several people were injured after multiple vehicles in Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy collided with each other on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district on Monday. Rahul Gandhi was safe in the incident, according to the information provided.

The accident reportedly occurred near the 91-kilometre milestone in the Haliyapur area, where five vehicles belonging to the convoy and an ambulance were involved in the collision. Congress party workers, officials and security personnel were among those injured.

Further details about the number of injured people and the severity of their injuries were awaited.

Rahul Gandhi on Visit to Sultanpur Court

Rahul Gandhi was travelling to Sultanpur to appear before a special MP-MLA court in connection with a criminal defamation case involving alleged objectionable remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was the BJP president at the time of the alleged incident.

The court was scheduled to pronounce its verdict in the case on Monday. Santosh Kumar Pandey, counsel for the complainant, said Gandhi was required to appear in person for the pronouncement of the judgment.

Additional Civil Judge Shubham Verma had earlier fixed October 13 as the date for delivering the verdict. The proceedings have attracted attention because of the senior political figures involved in the case.

According to Sultanpur Superintendent of Police Vineet Jaiswal, Gandhi was expected to travel by road from Lucknow to Sultanpur and reach the district at around 10 am, in accordance with his scheduled itinerary.

Security Arrangements in Place

Police authorities had made arrangements to maintain security and law and order in and around the special MP-MLA court premises ahead of Gandhi’s appearance. Adequate personnel were expected to be deployed to manage the situation during the proceedings.

The accident on the Purvanchal Expressway occurred as Gandhi was travelling for the court hearing, disrupting the convoy’s journey. Details regarding the immediate response to the collision and the medical treatment provided to those injured were not immediately available.

Defamation Case Dates Back to 2018

The defamation case originated on August 4, 2018, when BJP leader Vijay Mishra, a former chairman of the Sultanpur District Cooperative Bank, filed a complaint against Gandhi over his alleged remarks about Amit Shah.

The alleged comments were made during a campaign rally in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections. Mishra subsequently approached the court, alleging that Gandhi’s remarks were defamatory.

The case has since been heard by the special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur, which was scheduled to deliver its verdict on Monday.

The latest developments combined the road accident involving Gandhi’s convoy with the closely watched court proceedings. While Gandhi remained safe, authorities were expected to establish the precise circumstances of the collision and confirm the condition of those injured.

Further information about the accident and the court’s decision was awaited.
