New Delhi, October 2026 : Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani has been admitted to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi with a chest infection. His condition is stable, according to hospital officials.
The 98-year-old leader was brought to the hospital at around 7.30 pm on Friday and admitted to the pulmonary department. He is currently under observation by a team of doctors, while medical tests are being conducted to assess his condition and determine the course of treatment.
Hospital officials confirmed that Advani is receiving medical care and remains stable. Further updates on his health are awaited.
This is not the first time the veteran politician has been hospitalised in recent months. He was admitted to Apollo Hospital in May this year due to age-related health complications and remained under medical supervision for a few days before being discharged.
Earlier, in December 2024, Advani was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital for medical management and investigations. He was treated under the supervision of a neurologist. The hospital subsequently reported that his condition was stable and that he had shown gradual improvement. On December 17, 2024, officials said he was likely to be shifted out of the ICU within the following one to two days.
Born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi, now in Pakistan, Advani is one of the most prominent figures in the history of the BJP. He played a significant role in the party’s expansion from a relatively small political organisation into a major force in national politics.
Advani served as BJP president on multiple occasions and helped strengthen its organisational network across the country. His nationwide Ram Rath Yatra in 1990 became a major turning point in Indian politics and contributed to the party’s growing political presence.
He served as India’s Deputy Prime Minister from 2002 to 2004 in the government led by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He also held key ministerial responsibilities, including the Home Affairs portfolio.
In recognition of his contribution to public life, Advani was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2024. He had previously received the Padma Vibhushan in 2015.
Advani remains a senior figure in the BJP’s political history, having played a central role in shaping the party’s growth over several decades.
