New Delhi, October 2026 : The Congress party on Saturday paid homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary, with senior party leaders offering floral tributes at Shakti Sthal in the national capital.

Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, party General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and several other senior leaders visited Shakti Sthal to pay their respects to the former Prime Minister.

Earlier, the Congress paid tribute to Indira Gandhi through a post on social media platform X, describing her as India's first woman Prime Minister and a symbol of exceptional courage and determination.

"On the death anniversary of India's first woman Prime Minister, a symbol of indomitable courage and willpower, Smt. Indira Gandhi ji, humble tribute," the party said.

In another post, the Congress said it remembered her courage, strong leadership and lifelong commitment to India's unity, integrity and progress.

Popularly known as the 'Iron Lady of India', Indira Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. She was the daughter of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru and belonged to a Kashmiri Pandit family.

Indira Gandhi served as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination on October 31, 1984. Her tenure witnessed several significant political, social and economic developments that shaped the country's history.

One of the defining moments of her leadership was the 1971 India-Pakistan war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. Her role during the conflict established her image as a decisive leader on the international stage.

Her contributions to national integration are also remembered through National Integration Day, observed on November 19, coinciding with her birth anniversary. The observance was instituted by the Congress in 1985 to commemorate her efforts towards strengthening national unity.

The occasion highlights India's diversity and the importance of collective efforts in maintaining the country's unity and promoting development.

The Congress said Indira Gandhi's commitment to India's unity and integrity continued to inspire generations, as party leaders and workers across the country remembered her legacy on the 42nd anniversary of her assassination.
