Commonwealth Games gold medallist beaten 3-0 by Yang Chengyu in women’s 60kg semifinal as India’s medal tally rises to 55
Aichi-Nagoya, Sept 2026 : India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medallist Priya Ghanghas secured a bronze medal at the Asian Games 2026 after losing to China’s Yang Chengyu in the women’s 60kg semifinal on Wednesday.
Priya was beaten by Yang in a closely contested opening round before the Chinese boxer gradually took control of the bout and secured victory on the judges’ scorecards. The result added India’s 26th bronze medal at the Games, taking the country’s overall tally to 55 medals, including eight gold, 21 silver and 26 bronze.
Yang started the opening round aggressively, attempting to dictate the pace with early combinations. Priya responded with counter-punches and managed to land several clean shots. As the round progressed, the Indian began finding her rhythm and appeared increasingly effective with her combinations.
However, Yang finished the round strongly with a solid punch, and the judges awarded her the round by a narrow 3-2 margin.
The Chinese boxer continued to apply pressure in the second round. Priya and Yang exchanged punches after the Chinese fighter opened with a flurry of attacks. While Priya attempted to respond with counters, Yang’s activity and accuracy earned her another advantage.
Yang won the second round 4-1 on the judges’ scorecards, leaving Priya needing a strong finish in the final round.
Priya attempted to increase her attacking output in the third round but struggled to land consistently against Yang’s disciplined defence. The Chinese boxer maintained her distance effectively while continuing to score with her punches.
Yang took the final round 4-1 to complete the victory and advance to the final, while Priya had to settle for the bronze medal.
Despite the semifinal defeat, Priya’s medal adds to India’s strong showing at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
Earlier in the day, Indian archery produced a memorable double, with the women’s compound team and mixed team both securing gold medals.
Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep won the women’s compound team title after defeating China 238-234 in the final. India controlled the contest from the opening rotation and maintained its advantage throughout the match.
The victory gave Jyothi her fourth Asian Games gold medal, while Chikitha and Prithika secured their first Asiad golds.
Chikitha later returned to the range alongside Sahil Jadhav in the compound mixed team final. The Indian duo faced South Korea in a tense contest that ended 157-157 in regulation, forcing a shoot-off.
India held its nerve in the decider, with Chikitha and Sahil both hitting 10s. South Korea’s Choi Yonghee needed a 10 with his final arrow to keep his team alive but managed only a nine, handing India another gold medal.
The mixed team victory also secured India a qualification quota for the compound mixed team event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, marking an important milestone for Indian archery as compound events prepare to make their Olympic debut.
For India, Priya’s bronze combined with the two archery golds to make Wednesday another significant day in the country’s Asian Games campaign.
