Tamil Nadu CM Vijay to Launch Expanded Vetri Travel Scheme for Women on Gandhi Jayanti

Chennai, Oct 2026 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is scheduled to launch the expanded Vetri Travel Scheme for women on Friday, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti, at the Koyambedu bus terminus in Chennai.

The expanded initiative will extend the existing free bus travel facility beyond ordinary government city buses to include Express, LSS and Deluxe services, widening access to public transport for women and transgender beneficiaries across the state.

The free travel programme was originally introduced during the previous DMK government. The present administration has renamed it the Vetri Travel Scheme and expanded the categories of government buses covered under the initiative.

According to figures cited for the expanded programme, a total of 12,692 government buses will be brought under its coverage. The scheme is expected to benefit around 84 lakh women daily and facilitate more than 16 lakh one-way journeys.

The expansion is aimed at improving access to public transport and helping beneficiaries travel more conveniently for work, education, healthcare and other daily requirements.

However, questions remain regarding the distance passengers can cover without paying a fare, particularly for longer journeys involving multiple bus services. Clarification is also awaited on whether passengers can undertake intercity journeys, including routes connecting Chennai, Coimbatore and Nagercoil, entirely free of charge by changing buses along the way.

Government Express buses generally operate over distances ranging from 30 to 100 kilometres, while LSS services typically cover around 30 to 40 kilometres. Deluxe services generally operate over distances of approximately 30 to 50 kilometres, according to the details cited.

Routes mentioned in connection with the expanded scheme include Tiruchi-Dindigul, Thanjavur-Nagapattinam, Thanjavur-Velankanni, Tindivanam-Villupuram, Vriddhachalam-Tiruchi, Coimbatore-Palani, Palani-Dindigul, Coimbatore-Erode, Erode-Salem and Madurai-Virudhunagar.

A possible chain of connections linking Chennai with Chengalpattu, Tindivanam, Villupuram, Vriddhachalam, Tiruchi, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Kovilpatti, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil and Kanyakumari has also been highlighted.

However, the availability of services along these routes does not automatically establish that the entire journey will qualify for free travel. The operating distance of a bus service and the distance eligible for a fare exemption under the scheme are separate considerations.

Passengers planning longer journeys will require clear information on eligible services, journey limits, ticketing procedures and the rules governing transfers between buses.

The expanded Vetri Travel Scheme builds on the existing free travel facility in ordinary government city buses, with the broader objective of making public transport more accessible to women and transgender beneficiaries across Tamil Nadu.
