Lucknow, September 2026: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday visited flood-affected areas of Kushinagar following the breach of the A.P. embankment along the Narayani River and took stock of the situation. He conducted an aerial survey of the breached section and distributed relief material kits and lunch packets among affected families.
Interacting with flood victims at the relief distribution site, the Chief Minister said such severe flooding had occurred in the area after several years, triggered by the sudden inflow of large volumes of water from Nepal. He said the entire government stood with the affected people during the crisis and assured that no effort would be spared in relief and rescue operations, healthcare, housing, crop-loss compensation and strengthening the embankment.
Following four consecutive days of heavy rainfall, several parts of Uttar Pradesh and other areas of the country have faced severe flooding. Large quantities of water accumulated in Nepal due to heavy rainfall have been flowing downstream. Under normal conditions, the Narayani River carries around 3 to 4 lakh cusecs of water, but during the flood, the flow suddenly rose to nearly 5.5 lakh cusecs, resulting in the breach of the A.P. embankment and flooding in several villages.
The administration had been monitoring the situation since Monday. Two teams each of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with a Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) flood unit, have been deployed for relief and rescue operations. The district administration and engineers of the Irrigation Department are engaged in relief and rescue work.
The Chief Minister said 5,000 relief material packets had been arranged for affected families. Each packet contains 35 items, including 10 kg rice, 10 kg flour, 10 kg potatoes, 2 kg pulses, puffed rice, gram, cooking oil, spices, salt and a bucket, with each packet weighing around 50 kg.
Yogi directed officials to provide Rs 4 lakh in assistance to the family in the event of any loss of life. Families whose houses have been completely destroyed should be provided new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana or Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana. Those whose houses have been damaged but can be repaired should receive financial assistance for repairs.
Crop damage, particularly to paddy, sugarcane and vegetable crops, is expected across 15-16 villages. The Chief Minister directed officials to conduct a survey and ensure compensation reaches affected farmers within 10 days. He also ordered immediate repairs to roads damaged by the floods.
He instructed the Irrigation Department to strengthen the entire embankment so that it does not breach again and the area remains protected from future flooding. He further suggested that the Narayani River should be dredged and channelised, if feasible, with the removed silt deposited along both sides to minimise damage to agricultural fields and deepen the river channel.
Yogi also directed authorities to organise health camps in the affected areas for the next five to six days. Necessary healthcare should be provided to prevent water-borne diseases following the floods. Primary and community health centres should maintain adequate stocks of anti-snake venom and anti-rabies vaccines so that patients do not have to wait for treatment during emergencies.
The administration was instructed to shift people from villages inundated by floodwaters, particularly families whose houses have collapsed, to safe relief camps. Cooked food should be provided at the camps, along with electricity. Where power supply is unavailable, generators should be arranged to ensure adequate lighting.
The Chief Minister stressed that authorities should work not only to address the immediate crisis but also towards a permanent solution to prevent similar flooding in the future.
Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh, MPs Shashank Mani and Vijay Kumar Dubey, MLAs Dr Aseem Kumar and Surendra Kumar Kushwaha, and other public representatives and officials were present during the visit.
