Prime Minister praises Indian pilot’s courage after he was injured during an in-flight attack and helped avert a potential aviation tragedy
New Delhi, Oct 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot of Flydubai flight FZ1073, for displaying immense courage after being injured during an in-flight incident and helping safeguard the lives of passengers and crew.
Describing Machchhar as a “hero”, Modi said the pilot demonstrated extraordinary courage and unwavering determination despite being seriously injured. His actions, the Prime Minister said, helped prevent a major tragedy and save hundreds of lives.
Taking to X, Modi wrote, “Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO. In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others. His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy.”
“India is proud of Captain Machchhar,” Modi added, while praying for his speedy recovery, renewed strength and good health.
The Flydubai flight, operating as FZ1073, was reportedly involved in an emergency after an attack on board. The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where the injured pilot received medical attention.
The incident has also drawn praise from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who earlier commended Machchhar for what he described as “extraordinary bravery” in preventing a potential mid-air catastrophe.
In a statement shared by the Office of the Israeli Prime Minister on X, Netanyahu said the Indian pilot showed exceptional courage despite suffering serious injuries during the incident.
“My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery,” Netanyahu said.
According to Netanyahu, Machchhar was stabbed and seriously wounded but continued to act to protect those on board. He reportedly fought back, resisted the attacker and opened the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to overpower the assailant.
Netanyahu said the pilot’s actions prevented what could have developed into a major aviation disaster.
“He saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens and other nationals,” Netanyahu stated.
The Israeli Prime Minister also expressed concern for Machchhar’s condition and wished him a speedy and complete recovery, describing him as “a true hero”.
The incident has brought attention to the role of flight crew in responding to emergencies under extreme circumstances, with leaders in India and Israel publicly recognising the pilot’s actions.
