Gill’s Double Century Powers India to Record Chase Against West Indies

India chase down 406 in just 43.3 overs to win by eight wickets and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series

Oct 2026 : The second ODI between India and the West Indies will be remembered as one of the most extraordinary run-fests in recent one-day cricket. The match produced 811 runs, five centuries and a record-breaking chase, with India overcoming a massive 406-run target to register an eight-wicket victory.

The West Indies, batting first, posted a formidable 405 for three, their first-ever 400-plus total in ODI cricket. The Caribbean side appeared to have put itself in a commanding position after three of its batters scored centuries.

However, India responded with an extraordinary batting display, reaching 406 for two in just 43.3 overs. The victory gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

India’s chase was led by captain Shubman Gill, who produced a spectacular unbeaten double century. Gill smashed 223 not out, taking the game away from the West Indies with an innings built on aggressive strokeplay and remarkable consistency.

He received excellent support from Rohit Sharma, who scored a commanding 101. The opening pair put India firmly in control from the beginning, adding 255 runs for the first wicket and leaving the West Indies with little room to recover.

The match had already entered record territory during the West Indies innings. John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scored centuries as the visitors crossed the 400-run mark. Their total of 405 represented an enormous challenge for India, particularly against a bowling attack that had the opportunity to defend a huge score.

Instead, India's top order transformed the contest.

Gill's unbeaten 223 ensured that India maintained a high scoring rate throughout the chase, while Rohit’s century provided the early momentum. Once the opening partnership crossed 200, the required run rate ceased to be a significant concern for the hosts.

The combined total of 811 runs was one of the defining statistics of the match. Five centuries in a single ODI also underlined the extent to which batting dominated proceedings.

For the West Indies, the defeat was particularly disappointing because the team had produced its highest level of batting performance in the match, yet still failed to defend 405. The bowlers struggled to create sustained pressure after India's openers settled into their rhythm.

West Indies captain Shai Hope acknowledged the positives from his team's batting effort but admitted that the margin for error against India was extremely small.

Hope said the team had been consistently producing competitive totals, but facing a strong Indian batting line-up meant that even a minor lapse could prove costly. Once India's batters received a good start, he said, it became difficult for the West Indies to find a way back into the contest.

The West Indies captain also praised India's batting performance, acknowledging that his side failed to apply sufficient pressure during the chase. India was allowed to score freely in the early stages, and the match gradually slipped away from the Caribbean side.

The result not only sealed the ODI series for India but also highlighted the extraordinary depth and firepower of its batting line-up.

With 811 runs scored, five centuries registered and a 406-run target chased down with eight wickets in hand, the second ODI produced a remarkable statistical spectacle. Gill's unbeaten 223 was the standout performance, turning what initially appeared to be an imposing West Indies total into a successful Indian chase.
