Washington, November 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that the Republican Party would have secured a “landslide” victory in the midterm elections had he personally been on the ballot, as Democrats made significant gains and took control of the US Congress.
Despite saying that he would accept the election results, Trump appeared to shift responsibility for the Republicans' major electoral setback to party candidates, suggesting that his absence from the ballot had influenced the outcome.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.
In a separate post, the President suggested that he would take on the role of a political commentator to examine the reasons behind candidates' victories and defeats.
“I’m going to become a Political Pundit, both good and bad, on the reasons these Candidates won and lost! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he wrote.
His remarks came after Republicans suffered a significant setback in Tuesday's midterm elections, with Democrats securing control of Congress. The outcome is expected to make it more difficult for the Trump administration to advance its legislative agenda during the remaining two years of his presidency.
Trump's comments also came against the backdrop of his earlier warnings that he would use presidential veto powers to block legislation if Democrats took control of Congress.
In an interview with New York Post columnist Miranda Devine for the newspaper's 'Pod Force One' podcast, released on Monday, Trump had indicated that he was prepared for a prolonged confrontation with a Democrat-controlled Congress.
“I think we’re going to do great. But if we didn’t win, I veto everything. I’ll be vetoing, vetoing,” he said.
In a preview clip aired on Sunday, Trump had similarly suggested that he could embrace the role of “Mr. Veto” if Republicans lost their congressional majority.
He indicated that repeatedly rejecting legislation for “a month or two” could eventually bring Democrats to the negotiating table. According to Trump, the opposition would eventually approach him to reach an agreement after facing a series of presidential vetoes.
The remarks suggested that Trump intended to use his constitutional authority to reject legislation as leverage in negotiations with Democrats.
The President also acknowledged that the US Constitution prevents him from seeking a third presidential term, although he admitted that he would “love to run again”.
With Democrats now controlling both chambers of Congress, the political balance in Washington has shifted considerably. Congressional investigations, legislative disagreements and disputes over government priorities are expected to shape the relationship between the White House and the incoming Democratic leadership.
Trump's claim that Republicans would have won by a landslide had he contested the elections came as the party faced the task of assessing its losses and preparing for an increasingly challenging legislative environment.
