Flavio Bolsonaro Claims Brazil Presidency After Fleeing to US, Faces Fraud and Money Laundering Probe

MIAMI, Oct 2026 : Brazil’s defeated right-wing presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro has declared himself the country’s rightful leader after arriving in the United States, signalling a fresh political confrontation following leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s victory in Sunday’s runoff election.

Bolsonaro, 45, arrived in Florida on Wednesday aboard a private jet at Opa-Locka Executive Airport near Miami, accompanied by his wife and daughters. He announced that he would lead the Brazilian opposition from the United States and alleged that electoral fraud had deprived him of victory.

“I am the elected president, and the criminals who stole Brazil’s election are part of a criminal organization that has established a tyranny,” Bolsonaro said in a statement posted on X. In a subsequent statement, he revised his claim, describing himself as the opposition’s “leader” rather than the president.

His departure has raised questions about Brazil’s political stability, the allegations surrounding the election and the legal proceedings facing the former candidate.

Liberal Party Distances Itself From Fraud Claims

Rogerio Marinho, the Liberal Party’s leader in Brazil’s Senate, expressed solidarity with Bolsonaro, describing him as a “political exile”. However, Marinho distanced the party from allegations that the election had been manipulated.

“The Liberal Party cannot make that claim,” he said, adding that there was no evidence to support the allegation of electoral fraud.

Marinho nevertheless described Bolsonaro as a prominent figure on Brazil’s political right, saying he remained a leader of the movement.

US President Donald Trump, whose administration has strong political links with Bolsonaro and his father, former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, described the election as “very strange” but said he would not intervene in Flavio Bolsonaro’s claim to the presidency.

Trump has previously expressed support for the Bolsonaro family. Jair Bolsonaro remains under house arrest in Brazil following proceedings related to his alleged attempts to overturn his defeat to Lula in the 2022 presidential election.

Questions Over Departure From Brazil

Bolsonaro’s journey to the United States has attracted scrutiny because he is under investigation in Brazil over alleged corruption and money laundering. With his parliamentary immunity approaching its end, he had been ordered to surrender his passports but nevertheless left the country, travelling through Argentina and Ecuador, according to the report.

A police source told AFP that his Brazilian and diplomatic passports had been cancelled. However, Italian documents seen by AFP indicated that Bolsonaro had also held Italian nationality since 2023.

The US Department of Homeland Security said Bolsonaro and his family members had been inspected and cleared in accordance with applicable immigration laws and procedures.

The travel restrictions were issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a controversial figure among Brazil’s political right who has played a leading role in legal proceedings involving Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula, who won Sunday’s election with 51.8 per cent of the vote, criticised Flavio Bolsonaro’s departure, calling it shameful. However, Brazilian police said on Wednesday that the former candidate was not considered a fugitive.

The episode has also sparked controversy in neighbouring Argentina. Opposition lawmakers there have sought an explanation from the government about how Bolsonaro was able to transit through the country. Authorities said he possessed valid travel documents, while opposition lawmaker Agustin Rossi called for chief of cabinet Diego Santilli to provide details to parliament.

Film Financing Under Investigation

One of the major investigations involving Flavio Bolsonaro concerns the financing of Dark Horse, an unreleased biographical film about his father, Jair Bolsonaro, starring US actor Jim Caviezel.

In May, Intercept Brasil published audio recordings in which Flavio Bolsonaro allegedly discussed approximately $24 million in financing for the film with banker Daniel Vorcaro, who is jailed in connection with one of Brazil’s major fraud cases.

Before the recordings emerged, Flavio Bolsonaro had denied knowing Vorcaro or receiving financing from him for the project.

In July, Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered an investigation into the film’s financing to determine whether it involved corruption, money laundering or the illegal movement of currency.

Bolsonaro later acknowledged that Vorcaro had financed the film but maintained that the arrangement was a private business transaction and “completely legal”.

His arrival in the United States adds another dimension to Brazil’s political tensions, as questions remain over the investigations, his future role in the opposition and the implications of his self-imposed exile.
